The Playbook Behind the Purpose
Long before Doug Flutie became a nationally recognized autism advocate, he was making history on the football field.
The 1984 Heisman Trophy winner built a legendary career that spanned college football and more than two decades of professional football. His unforgettable “Hail Flutie” touchdown pass for Boston College remains one of the most iconic moments in college football history.
But in 1992, Doug stepped into a role that would shape an even greater part of his life: dad.
After his son, Doug Jr., was diagnosed with autism at age three, Doug and his wife, Laurie, experienced firsthand the challenges families can face finding the right resources, services, and support.
That experience became a mission.
In 1998, they founded the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, beginning nearly three decades of work supporting people and families affected by autism.
Two Missions. One Shared Purpose.
For Aces for Autism, this evening is about more than welcoming a football legend to Eastern North Carolina.
It’s about bringing our community together around the families at the heart of our mission.
For more than a decade, Aces for Autism has worked alongside children and families to provide support, resources, education, and opportunities that help individuals with autism reach their full potential.
On November 8, we’ll celebrate how far that mission has come and help build what comes next.
